I figured this would be a good question to ask.
My own personal story:
My girlfriend back when Hetalia first came out was heavily into GerIta and we roleplayed, so she constantly threw it on me. I would throw shit at the screen screaming, "WHY ARE THE EPISODES 5 MINUTES LONG? THE OPENINGS AND CREDITS ARE LONGER THAN THE STORY. THIS IS BULLSHIT." and quit it almost after the first episode.
Fast-forward to 3 years later, way after the English dubs and season 3 [subbed] had just been released. My friend Karen hated Hetalia as well because she thought it was all yaoi, but she fell in love with the storyline and I soon followed after AWA 2011. The Hetalia group was fantastic, and I soon fell in love with the characters that I never gave a chance too.

I got into right before Memorial Weekend of 2011. I'd been seeing it floating around places and such and at first I wasn't interested. Then I thought - oh why not? - and gave it a go. I haven't looked back since. Hetalia has helped me make so many new friends, enjoy cosplaying again and because of it those new people have kept me going and alive. Quit honestly, if I hadn't gotten into Hetalia, I would probably have died back in January of this year. So in a way, Hetalia saved my life. <3

I first have been coming across Hetalia when I watched a video from crashdubstudios. That's an popular German fandub studio on youtube, which I like to follow~ It was a dub of the world conference and these guys did an amazing job, like always. I always thought "Oh yeah, I should watch this Anime sometime", but actually never did xD
Years later; spring 2012; the Manga finally appeared in Austria and German and I bought it C= From that on I got really into it and well~ I quess the rest is history.

Well, a lot of my theater friends had this really strange action they'd do back in '11 around fall. They'd raise their hand and scream 'PASTAA~', which really confused me, because, obviously, I didn't understand. Soon I was sucked in and sorta melded in without knowing what the heck it was about...
Later one of them consulted me asking if I'd watched 'Fullmetal Alchemist' or 'Hetalia', given they'd discuss it a lot during class...
I admitted that I hadn't and ended up checking it out online that same day.
Since then, it's been my favorite fandom. ^.^

I feel that's why the fandom is so strong. <3 I first have been coming across Hetalia when I watched a video from crashdubstudios. I think I first heard of it a couple of years back from a friend in Chicago, but never really looked into it. Fast forward to SoDakCon, January 2011: Todd Haberkorn was a special guest, and there were a bunch of Hetalia cosplayers and even a panel or two on it (which again, I didn't really think much of because I fail like that.) It wasn't until a month or two later when I finally came around and started watching it. I haven't looked back since. Despite some of the issues the fandom seems to have (shipping wars, etc.), it's still an awesome one to be a part of. I've made /so/ many amazing people because of RPing Hetalia, and-and... *happy floppu*

My story is pretty crazy ^_^; Back like 2 years ago, I was the new girl. I moved from NJ to just outside the state, in PA. When talking with fellow anime fans they started talking about Russia... Like he was a person. I was the first to say "Excuse me but what the fuck is going on" So when I went over my friend Kayla's house she played me the trailers. I just didnt get it. After a while I watched it, and was hooked. But I quit it because the fandom sucked. BAD Like it was mobbed with weaboos and losers at first. They all left once the movie premired, and have moved on to Homestuck. (not saying if u like it ur a weeb, but thats what many did) So I got hooked AGAIN. And let me tell you, I LOVE IT. When I met Michael J Tatum at Otakon 2012 I just lost it because hes France and France is my boo and dies. Seeing Todd Habberkorn was great too, he's a cutie. Aaaaand at Ota 2011 I belive Patrick and Eric Vale were there. Oh and Scott. *feels priveliged* But yeah! This fandom is now fantastic, and I love it! And the show is just WOW.
and its so acceotable to closet cosplay saving $$$ yey

I am always looking for anime to watch and I also love art/pictures and started seeing art/pictures of Bishie's as Countries and was like, what is this? So doing research I find Hetalia hmmm, ok. Alas, I had Prussia's reaction at first what in the hell is this shit, 5 minutes what the hell is going on, NO, NEXT....... didn't come back to it for a while, so late last year, after still posting pics of Hetalia because come on Topless Prussia, France, Spain, Italy brothers, Austria, Germany, etc. still hot, right? some of my friends got curious and watched and told me ok just WATCH IT, but this time most of it had been dubbed, etc. So what'd I do, I watched bloopers and rolled off my sofa on the floor snort laughing my ass off, to this day we blast that shit in my car, especially ....and there's a walnut - I got a SHIELD MUTHA FUCKA GHAAAAAAAAAHHHHH to everyone at the stop light staring at us like what in the hell are you on HAAAAAAAAAA. So needless to say.... I watched, and watched and fell in love with Hetalia and the Fandom, and the hilarity and the bloopers and just the greatness that it is. I've not RP'd in a while, but really am happy to have found such a community and camaraderie with the Hetalia fandom! I don't know if I'd ever cosplay, but so enjoy all of you that do, much love!
